Background Persistent high levels of sexually transmitted infection STI in Madagascar indicate current prevention strategies are inadequate. We identified venues where people meet sexual partners and measured the need and potential for venue -based prevention.

Methods Interviews were conducted in 7 Madagascar towns with 1 community informants to identify social venues , 2 individuals socializing at a sample of venues to assess sexual behavior among venue patrons, and 3 venue representatives to assess the potential for venue -based intervention.

Results Community informants identified numerous venues range: 67— venues , depending on the town ; streets, bars, and hotels were most commonly reported. STI symptom levels were disproportionately high among respondents reporting either sex trade or new sexual partnership in the past 4 weeks. Visiting entertainment venues and sexual health in China. Entertainment venues in China are associated with risky sexual behavior. Most previous studies related to entertainment venues in China have focused on sex workers and commercial sex, but this study addressed sexual health in a sample of the general urban population.

Both behavioral self-reports of unprotected sex and biomedical STD test results measures were used. Those who visited entertainment venues were more likely to be male, younger, single, with higher education, and to have more discretionary income. For both men and women, visiting entertainment venues was a significant predictor for unprotected sex and STD infection. Gender differences were observed in predicting unprotected sex and STD infections. Entertainment venues could be potential sites for place-based intervention programs and outreach for the general population.

Environmental tobacco smoke in hospitality venues in Greece. Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke is a major threat to public health. Greece, having the highest smoking prevalence in the European Union is seriously affected by passive smoking. The purpose of this study was to measure environmental tobacco smoke ETS exposure in the non smoking areas of hospitality venues and offices in Greece and to compare the levels of exposure to levels in the US, UK and Ireland before and after the implementation of a smoking ban.

Experimental measurements of particulate matter 2. Designated non-smoking areas of hospitality venues in Greece are significantly more polluted with ETS than outdoor air and similar venues in Europe and the United States.

The implementation of a total indoor smoking ban in hospitality venues has been shown to have a positive effect on workers and patrons' health. The necessity of such legislation in Greece is thus warranted. Major Sport Venues. Taxonomy of Caribbean tourism alcohol venues : implications for HIV transmission. Tourism areas represent ecologies of heightened HIV vulnerability characterized by a disproportionate concentration of alcohol venues. Limited research has explored how alcohol venues facilitate HIV transmission.

Using latent class analysis, we identified evidence-based typologies of alcohol venues for each of the three facets. Focused contrasts identified the co-occurrence of classes of structural features, classes of types of patrons, and classes of HIV risk behavior, thus elaborating the nature of high risk venues.

We identified three categories of venue structural features, three for venue patrons, and five for HIV risk behaviors. Analysis revealed that alcohol venues with the greatest structural risks e. Our results highlight the stratification of venue patrons into groups who engage in behaviors of varying risk in structural settings that vary in risk.

The convergence of high-risk patron groups in alcohol venues with the greatest structural risk suggests these locations have potential for HIV transmission. Policymakers and prevention scientists can use these methods and data to target HIV prevention resources to identified priority areas.

A mixed methods analysis of the risk environment in nightlife venues in Tijuana, Mexico.

To analyze environmental sources of HIV vulnerability among male clients of FSWs in Tijuana, we used mixed methods to investigate correlates of clients who met FSWs in nightlife venues and clients' perspectives on venue -based HIV risk. Logistic regression identified micro-level correlates of meeting FSWs in nightlife venues , which were triangulated with clients' narratives regarding macro-level influences. In a multivariate model, offering increased pay for unprotected sex and binge drinking were micro-level factors that were independently associated with meeting FSWs in nightlife venues versus other places.

In qualitative interviews, clients characterized nightlife venues as high risk due to the following macro-level features: social norms dictating heavy alcohol consumption; economic exploitation by establishment owners; and poor enforcement of sex work regulations in nightlife venues. Structural interventions in nightlife venues are needed to address venue -based risks.

Secondhand tobacco smoke in public venues in three Indonesian cities.

Full Text Available Background: The aim of this study was to measure secondhand tobacco including kretek smoke SHS concentrations in public places in Jakarta, Bogor, and Palembang before laws banning smoking in public spaces went into effect.

Methods: Particulate matter PM2. Also, in Jakarta, vapor-phase nicotine was measured in 5 schools, 5 hospitals, 5 government offices, 9 restaurants, and 10 entertainment venues. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Geometric mean PM2. Air nicotine levels in Jakarta were highest in designated smoking areas 4. These were followed by government offices 0. Conclusion: SHS was detected in all venues in the three cities in Indonesia.

High levels of air nicotine were found in non-smoking areas of restaurants and entertainment venues , indicating that designated smoking areas are not an effective solution to eliminate SHS. There is no safe level of SHS exposure and thus SHS in these venues increases the risk of adverse health effects among children and adults. Med J Indones. The prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoking has risen in recent decades. Controlled studies suggest that waterpipe secondhand smoke SHS contains similar or greater quantities of toxicants than cigarette SHS, which causes significant morbidity and mortality.

Few studies have examined SHS from waterpipe tobacco in real-world settings. The purpose of this study was to quantify SHS exposure levels and describe the characteristics of waterpipe tobacco venues.

In , we conducted cross-sectional surveys of 46 waterpipe tobacco venues 9 in Istanbul, 17 in Moscow, and 20 in Cairo. We administered venue questionnaires, conducted venue observations, and sampled indoor air particulate matter PM2.

Venue characteristics and SHS concentrations were highly variable within and between cities. Overall, we observed a mean standard deviation SD of 5 5 waterpipe smokers and 5 3 cigarette smokers per venue. High concentrations of SHS constituents known to cause health effects indicate that indoor air quality in waterpipe tobacco venues may adversely affect the health of employees and customers.

This study assessed the association between accessibility of catering service venues and adolescents' alcohol use over the previous 30 days. The data were collected from cross-sectional surveys conducted in , students at 27 high schools in Chaoyang and Xicheng districts, Beijing using self-administered questionnaires to collect the adolescents information on socio-demographic characteristics and recent alcohol experiences.

The accessibility of, and proximity to, catering service venues were summarized by weights, which were calculated by multiplication of the type-weight and the distance-weight. All sampled schools were categorized into three subgroups low, middle, and high geographic density based on the tertile of nearby catering service venues , and a multi-level logistic regression analysis was performed to explore variance between the school levels.

Considering the setting characteristics, the catering service venues weighted value was found to account for 8. Results suggest that the greater accessibility of catering service venues around schools is associated with a growing risk of recent drinking. Food venue choice, consumer food environment, but not food venue availability within daily travel patterns are associated with dietary intake among adults, Lexington Kentucky The retail food environment may be one important determinant of dietary intake.

However, limited research focuses on individuals' food shopping behavior and activity within the retail food environment. This study's aims were to determine the association between six various dietary indicators and 1 food venue availability; 2 food venue choice and frequency; and 3 availability of healthy food within food venue.

Participants wore a global position system GPS data logger for 3-days 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day to track their daily activity space, which was used to assess food activity space. They completed a survey to assess demographics, food shopping behaviors, and dietary outcomes.

Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine associations between six dietary variables with food venue availability within activity space; food venue choice; frequency of shopping; and availability of food within food venue.

Venue -based HIV prevention interventions, especially in sex on premise venues , can disrupt high-risk sexual networks. However, prior to intervening, it is essential to understand the person- venue dynamics that contribute to HIV risk. Alcohol use, sexual behavior, and person- venue dynamics differed markedly across venue types. In dance clubs, substantial alcohol consumption often preceded visits to the darkroom for sex which, at times, included unprotected anal and vaginal intercourse.

Condoms, although available, were not easily accessible. HIV prevention messaging was generally non-existent. These venues are in critical need of interventions to reduce HIV transmission risk.

We performed a cross-sectional descriptive study from October to December The study population consisted of 40 hospitality venues in Barcelona selected by a random route sampling, with representation of the different types of smoking regulation included in the law smoking allowed, smoking ban and venues with smoking areas.

SHS levels were quantified by measuring PM 2. The measurements were carried out for 5 minutes outside the venue and for 30 minutes inside the venue. In addition, observational variables related to the characteristics of the venue and signs of tobacco consumption were recorded.

The concentration of PM 2. However, in venues where smoking was banned, the concentration was lower than the EPA standard and there were no significant differences with the outdoor PM 2.

Two years after the introduction of the Spanish smoking law, SHS exposure in venues where smoking was allowed was q still very high, representing a significant health risk for hospitality workers. The costs arising from the harms of gambling detract significantly from its benefits, and in all Australian jurisdictions various policy measures have been implemented to reduce these harms.

If successful, these would maximise the net benefits associated with EGM gambling. We conclude that there is a modest level of evidence supporting some measures, notably self-exclusion and, to a greater extent, the removal of ATMs. Further, policy measures implemented outside the control of venues such as ATM removal, reduction in bet limits, and the prohibition of smoking appear to be associated with more significant effects, based on analysis of EGM revenue data in Victoria.

The evidence for prospective measures is necessarily limited since the ultimate test is post-implementation efficacy, but there is growing evidence to suggest that pre-commitment, one-dollar maximum bets or other machine design changes may.

We categorized venues where women enrolled in HPTN reported meeting their last three sex partners as: 1 Formal, 2 Public, 3 Private, and 4 Virtual spaces. We used multinomial logistic regression to assess the association between these venues and women's individual characteristics and reports of their partners' HIV risk characteristics.

Women meeting partners at Formal venues reported more education and condom use than women meeting partners at other venues. Fewer partners met through Formal venues had "high" risk characteristics for HIV than through other venues and hence may pose less risk of HIV transmission.

HIV prevention interventions can help women choose partners with fewer risk characteristics across all venue types. The unit was divided into two spaces along its north-south axis. The western portion was designed as a music room that would provide a performance space from a solo artist to a Jazz combo to a small rock band. The plan also called for a microbrewery unit at the back of the unit. The bar music can be loud, while the music room can be pianissimo to forte depending on the type of performance.

The acoustical design aspects are critical for the music room. In addition, the acoustical separation between the two spaces is equally important. The design results are compared to actual field measurements.

The results showed that the music venue performed satisfactorily. The background sound along the northern portion was NC or less. Exposure to ultrafine particles in hospitality venues with partial smoking bans. Fine particles in hospitality venues with insufficient smoking bans indicate health risks from passive smoking. In a random sample of Viennese inns restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs and discotheques effects of partial smoking bans on indoor air quality were examined by measurement of count, size and chargeable surface of ultrafine particles UFPs sized nm, simultaneously with mass of particles sized nm PM2.

Air samples were taken in rooms unannounced during busy hours and analyzed by a diffusion size classifier and an optical particle counter. The particle number concentration was significantly correlated with the fine particle mass Phospitality premises. Health protection of non-smoking guests and employees from risky UFP concentration is insufficient, even in rooms labeled "non-smoking".

Partial smoking bans with separation of smoking rooms failed. Full Text Available In public places many countries banned smoking as the most important indoor source of fine airborne particulate matter. In Austria partial bans have been in force since , with exemptions for the hospitality industry.

The aim was to assess the validity of self-reported exposure to second-hand smoke SHS in 50 hospitality venues of Madrid Spain in , taking as a reference vapour-phase nicotine measured by active sampling.

The questions posed in the questionnaire permitted distinguishing between the different levels of SHS. However, the use of player account-based gambling data provides purely objective data. Based on this real-world data, the primary aim of the present study was to examine gambling behavior in gambling venues with different numbers of gambling terminals i.

Gambling frequency was highest in venues with terminals Approximately half of the sample Only 0. Compared to venues with one terminal, venues with two or more terminals were associated with gamblers placing more bets, and spending more time and money per session.

However, gamblers had higher losses albeit small in venues with one terminal compared to venues with terminals. No differences in net outcome were found between venues with one terminal and those with and terminals. Overall, the present study demonstrates that in the natural gambling environment, gambling behavior is reinforced in venues with multiple terminals.

Alcohol-serving venues can be places to engage in HIV-related sexual risk behaviors, but are also important sites of social support for patrons, which may mitigate risks.

We sought to examine the relationship between alcohol-serving venue attendance, social support, and HIV-related sexual risk behavior, by gender, in South Africa. Generalized estimating equations tested associations between daily venue attendance, social support, and sexual behaviors, separately by gender. Interaction effects between daily attendance and social support were assessed. Models were adjusted for venue , age, education, and ethnicity.

Daily attendance at venues was similar across genders and was associated with HIV-related risk behaviors, but the strength and direction of associations differed by gender. Among women, daily attendance was associated with greater number of partners and higher proportion of unprotected sex.

Social support was a significant moderator, with more support decreasing the strength of the relationship between attendance and risk. Among men, daily attendance was associated with a lower proportion of unprotected sex; no interaction effects were found for attendance and social support. Frequent venue attendance is associated with additional HIV-related risks for women, but this risk is mitigated by social support in venues.

These results were not seen for men. Successful HIV interventions in alcohol-serving venues should address the gendered context of social support and sexual risk behavior. The effect of Sao Paulo's smoke-free legislation on carbon monoxide concentration in hospitality venues and their workers. Samsa, M. Decision and Information Sciences. Argonne conducted a review of the literature to identify studies that quantify the direct and indirect economic consequences of avoidance behaviors that result from terrorist attacks.

Despite a growing amount of literature addressing terrorism impacts, relatively little is known about the causal relationships between risk perception, human avoidance behaviors, and the economic effects on commercial venues. Nevertheless, the technical and academic literature does provide some evidence, both directly and by inference, of the level and duration of post-event avoidance behaviors on commercial venues.

Contributions to early HIV diagnosis among patients linked to care vary by testing venue. Full Text Available Abstract Objective Early HIV diagnosis reduces transmission and improves health outcomes; screening in non-traditional settings is increasingly advocated. We compared test venues by the number of new diagnoses successfully linked to the regional HIV treatment center and disease stage at diagnosis.

Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study using structured chart review of newly diagnosed HIV patients successfully referred to the region's only HIV treatment center from to Demographics, testing indication, risk profile, and initial CD4 count were recorded.

Results There were newly diagnosed patients meeting study criteria. Median CD4 at diagnosis was Targeted testing by health care and public health entities based on patient request, risk profile, or patient condition lead to later diagnosis.

Conclusion Test venues varied by the number of new diagnoses made and the stage of illness at diagnosis. To improve the rate of early diagnosis, scarce resources should be allocated to maximize the number of new diagnoses at screening venues where diagnoses are more likely to be early or alter testing strategies at test venues where diagnoses are traditionally made late. Efforts to improve early diagnosis should be coordinated longitudinally on a regional basis according to this conceptual paradigm.

Attitudes towards community gambling venues and support for regulatory reform: an online panel study of residents in New South Wales, Australia. Harmful gambling has been identified as an important public health issue that affects individuals, families and the broader community.

One gambling product, electronic gambling machines EGMs , has been associated with significant gambling harm in Australia. There has been limited research that has explored community perceptions of EGMs and attitudes towards reform. An online survey was conducted with adults aged 16 years and over, representative of the population for age and gender.

Discrete choice and open-ended questions were used to gather data on gambling behaviours, use of and attitudes towards EGMs and EGM venues and support for gambling harm reduction measures. Three quarters of participants had visited an EGM venue in the previous year. Participants who had attended such venues were significantly more likely to use EGMs at least once per month. Participants attended EGM venues for a range of reasons including use of non-gambling facilities such as restaurants, the social aspects of the venue and ease of access to the venue.

Some participants also attended EGM venues specifically for the gambling facilities. Most participants identified some negative impacts of EGMs for local communities and were supportive of measures to reduce the number of EGMs and prevent children's exposure to EGMs in such venues. This study shows a high level of support for EGM reform amongst both individuals who attend EGM venues and also those who do not. There is potential for government to further regulate EGMs and the environments where they are located.

Impact of the Spanish smoking law on exponsure to secondhand smoke in offices and hospitality venues : before-and-after study. Nebot, Manel; L? HIV prevention programs often focus on the physical social venues where men who have sex with men MSM frequent as sites where sex behaviors are assumed to be practiced and risk is conferred. But, how exactly these behaviors influence venue patronage is not well understood. Findings reveal that sex behaviors, when modeled only as attributes possessed by focal individuals, were no more or less likely to affect choices to visit social venues.

However, when the sex behaviors of peers were also taken into consideration, we learn that individuals were statistically more likely in all three behavioral conditions to go places that attracted other MSM who practiced the same behaviors. This demonstrates that social venues can function as intermediary contexts in which relationships can form between individuals that have greater risk potential given the venues attraction to people who share the same risk tendencies. Despite numerous studies which have been done regarding soccer injuries worldwide, there is lack of available data considering the epidemiology of injuries in the Iranian soccer premier league, although it is the most popular sport in the country.

The main goal of this research was to determine the incidence of physical injuries in the studied population, considering other characteristics such as site, type and mechanism as well. The injury characteristics and exposure times were recorded by the team physician during all the matches and training sessions. The total exposure time was playing hours h of training versus h of competition.

Eighty six percent of the injuries were acute. Incidence of acute injuries was On average each injury had led the player being off the field for about 10 days. The incidence of injury in this research is in range of numbers obtained in important international tournaments but the rate of injuries during training sessions is higher than comparable studies. Exposure to secondhand smoke in terraces and other outdoor areas of hospitality venues in eight European countries.

Outdoor secondhand smoke SHS concentrations are usually lower than indoor concentrations, yet some studies have shown that outdoor SHS levels could be comparable to indoor levels under specific conditions. The main objectives of this study were to assess levels of SHS exposure in terraces and other outdoor areas of hospitality venues and to evaluate their potential displacement to adjacent indoor areas.

Nicotine and respirable particles PM2. Hospitality venues of the study included night bars, restaurants and bars. The fieldwork was carried out between March and March We gathered nicotine and PM2.

The median indoor SHS concentration was significantly higher in venues where smoking was allowed nicotine 3. The median outdoor nicotine concentration was higher in places where indoor smoking was banned 1.

Among the different types of outdoor areas, the highest median outdoor SHS levels nicotine: 4. Banning indoor smoking seems to displace SHS exposure to adjacent outdoor areas. Furthermore, indoor settings where smoking is banned but which have a semi-closed outdoor area have higher levels of SHS than those with open outdoor areas, possibly indicating that SHS also drifts from outdoors to indoors.

Current legislation restricting indoor SHS levels seems to be insufficient to protect hospitality workers--and patrons--from SHS exposure. Tobacco-free legislation should take these results into account and consider restrictions in the terraces of some hospitality venues to ensure effective protection.

Occupational noise exposure and regulatory adherence in music venues in the United Kingdom. Full Text Available Noise in most working environments is an unwanted by-product of the process. In most countries, noise exposure for workers has been controlled by legislation for many years. In the music industry the "noise" is actually the "desired" product, and for a long time the UK entertainment industry was exempt from these regulations. From April , however, it became regulated under the Noise at Work Regulations , meaning that employers from orchestras to nightclubs are legally required to adhere to the same requirements based on ISO for controlling noise exposure for their staff that have been applied to other industries for many years.

A key question is to what degree, 2 years after implementation, these employers are complying with their legal responsibilities to protect the staff from noise? Thirty staff members in different roles in the venues were monitored using noise dosimetry to determine noise exposure.

Questionnaires were used to determine work patterns, attitudes to noise and hearing loss, and levels of training about noise risk. Use of hearing protection was rare venues. The understanding of the hazard posed by noise was low, and implementation of the noise regulations was haphazard, with staff regularly exceeding regulatory limits. The implication is that the industry is failing to meet regulatory requirements. Advisor and…. Student goal orientation in learning inquiry skills with modifiable software advisors. The system incorporates software advisors that give task completion advice eg. Advisors ' knowledge includes concepts, strategies, examples, referrals to other advisors , and criteria for evaluating good products and skills. Students using SCI-WISE can select the advisors ' advice type specific, general, or hints , and when advisors give advice anytime, alert, or ask.

Students can also modify the advisors ' knowledge. The system is designed partly on a theoretical framework that assumes giving students higher levels of agency will facilitate higher-level goal orientation such as knowledge-building and produce higher levels of competence. In two studies of sixth graders, science students took a pretest of an open-ended inquiry question and a questionnaire that measured their goal orientations.

The students worked in pairs on an inquiry project about memory, using one of two versions of SCI-WISE, one modifiable and one not modifiable. After finishing the project, the students took a posttest similar to the pretest, and evaluated the system. The main hypotheses predicted that knowledge-oriented students using the modifiable version would rate the system higher, use it more effectively, and do better on the inquiry posttest than task-oriented students.

The results supported many of the hypotheses generated from the theoretical framework. Knowledge-oriented students tended to rate SCI-WISE higher, use more general purpose and system development advisors , and select more general advice and hints than task-oriented students.

On the posttest inquiry test, students with higher goal orientations scored higher on average, particularly when paired with another knowledge oriented student. The studies also showed that goal orientation was not correlated with grade point average. Finally, the. Knowledge representation and knowledge base design for operator advisor system. Forensic Advisors at the National Institute for Criminalistics and Criminology in Brussels act as advising body to the magistrate regarding analytical possibilities and the usefulness of trace analysis in a case. Initially, their function was devised to assist in complex murder cases with unknown offender. However, in a previous study, the increasing diversity of the cases they are requested for has been observed Bitzer et al.

In order to deepen our understanding of the decision steps in the criminal investigation process, the decision to involve a Forensic Advisor and the factors leading to their involvement were evaluated. The study focused on homicide, robbery and burglary cases with and without requests for a Forensic Advisor between January and June The factors were categorised into five knowledge dimensions: strategic, immediate, physical, criminal and utility.

Decision tree modelling was carried out in order to identify the factors influencing the request for a Forensic Advisor in the case. The decision to request a Forensic Advisor differs between different types of offences. It also depends on the complexity of the case in terms of the number of traces and objects collected at the crime scene, and the availability of witness reports. Indeed, Forensic Advisors take the role of trace analysis coordinator by providing an overview of all available traces, objects, analyses and results.

According to the principal implication factors and the performed case study, the contribution of Forensic Advisors consists mainly in summarising all information and advise on potential additional analyses. This might be explained by a loss of overview of the information and the possibilities regarding trace analysis by the magistrate responsible of the case. How do incentives lead to deception in advisor -client interactions? Explicit and implicit strategies of self-interested deception. When confronted with important questions we like to rely on the advice of experts. However, uncertainty can occur regarding advisors ' motivation to pursue self-interest and deceive the client. This can especially occur when the advisor has the possibility to receive an incentive by recommending a certain alternative. We investigated how the possibility to pursue self-interest led to explicit strategic behavior bias in recommendation and transfer of information and to implicit strategic behavior bias in information processing: evaluation and memory.

In Study 1 explicit strategic behavior could be identified: self-interested advisors recommended more often the self-serving alternative and transferred more self-interested biased information to their client compared to the advisor without specific interest.

Also deception through implicit strategic behavior was identified: self-interested advisors biased the evaluation of information less in favor of the client compared to the control group. Self-interested advisors also remembered conflicting information regarding their self-interest worse compared to advisors without self-interest. In Study 2 beside self-interest we assessed accountability which interacted with self-interest and increased the bias: when accountability was high advisor 's self-interest led to higher explicit strategic behavior less transfer of conflicting information , and to higher implicit strategic behavior devaluated and remembered less conflicting information.

Both studies identified implicit strategic behavior as mediator which can explain the relation between self-interest and explicit strategic behavior. Results of both studies suggest that self-interested advisors use explicit and implicit strategic behavior to receive an incentive. Thus, advisors do not only consciously inform their clients "self-interested," but they are influenced unconsciously by biased information processing - a tendency which even increased with high. This article focuses on reading and writing as factors that may hinder the completion of a Master's thesis. The corpus includes semi-structured interviews to graduates who completed their theses, non-completers, and Master's thesis advisors or directors of the Faculty of Ciencias Humanas of Universidad Nacional de Colombia.

The results show that writing a thesis involves having prior cognitive skills such the ability to accept criticism and the ability to edit a document, as well as processes that are the result of the thesis itself: critical reviews, academic writing and the ability to handle sources. In addition, the Computer Science Department plays a strong service role, offering approximately sixteen service course sections per long semester.

The department has eight regular full-time faculty members, including the Department Chairman and the Undergraduate Advisor , and from three to seven part-time faculty members. Due to the small number of regular faculty members and the resulting very heavy teaching loads, undergraduate advising has become a difficult problem for the department.

There is a one week early registration period and a three-day regular registration period once each semester. The Undergraduate Advisor 's regular teaching load of two classes, 6 - 8 semester hours, per semester, together with the large number of majors and small number of regular faculty, cause long queues and short tempers during these advising periods. The situation is aggravated by the fact that entering freshmen are rarely accompanied by adequate documentation containing the facts necessary for proper counselling.

There has been no good method of obtaining necessary facts and documenting both the information provided by the student and the resulting advice offered by the counsellors. Ethical Decision-Making for Homeland Security. Luciano Maiani and Prof. Filippo Menzinger Photo L. The process of candidates choose graduate programs: an analysis from the advisor perspective. This study aims to identify the criteria used by advisors in the decision-making on whether to accept a candidate for mentoring in a postgraduate strictu sensu program and examines possible relationships between this decision and their scientific production and mentees evasion.

In order to meet these goals one seeks to identify and analyze the selection criteria of candidates for the master's and doctorate programs at an institution; in this case, the Energy and Nuclear Research Institute - IPEN. More specifically, one seeks to study similarities and differences between those criteria among the advisors ; find out whether there is a correlation between the selection criteria and the advisors characteristics Profile ; identify the selection process used by advisors and point out which are the motivations that lead to evasion according to their point of view.

To meet these challenges, as the starting point of the research, a conceptual model was designed in order to form the basis for the preparation of the script for the interviews with open-ended questions as to identify the selection criteria used by a small group of advisors with a predefined profile.

From that point, based on the responses obtained in interviews, the survey was expanded to all advisors working in the IPEN Postgraduate program by implementing an online survey using Google Docs app for data collection. These data were then analyzed and reorganized according to an operational model of research that would guide the analysis by structural equation modeling SEM by means of the SmartPLS software, in order to identify the presence or absence of correlation between the criteria adopted by the advisors and their academic production and the evasion of their mentees, for that one relied on studies in: Bazerman and Moore ; Cohen ; Hair Jr.

However, stressors inherent to whistleblowing often impede rational thinking and act as a barrier to effective whistleblowing. The negative impact of these stressors on whistleblowing may be made worse depending on who engages in the misconduct: a peer or advisor.

In the present study, participants are presented with an ethical scenario where either a peer or advisor engages in misconduct, and positive and the negative consequences of whistleblowing are either directed to the wrongdoer, department, or university. Participant responses to case questions were evaluated for whistleblowing intentions, moral intensity, metacognitive reasoning strategies, and positive and negative, active and passive emotions.

Findings indicate that participants were less likely to report the observed misconduct of an advisor compared to a peer. Furthermore, the findings also suggest that when an advisor is the source of misconduct, greater negative affect results.

Post-hoc analyses were also conducted examining the differences between those who did and did not intend to blow the whistle under the circumstances of either having to report an advisor or peer.

The implications of these findings for understanding the complexities involved in whistleblowing are discussed. The tractable cognition thesis. This thesis , if true, serves cognitive psychology by constraining the space of computational-level theories of cognition.

To utilize this constraint, a precise and workable definition of "computational tractability" is needed. Following computer science tradition, many cognitive scientists and psychologists define computational tractability as polynomial-time computability, leading to the P-Cognition thesis.

This article explains how and why the P-Cognition thesis may be overly restrictive, risking the exclusion of veridical computational-level theories from scientific investigation. Possible objections to the Tractable Cognition thesis , and its proposed formalization, are discussed, and existing misconceptions are clarified.

This study investigates the advantages and disadvantages of three hybrid drive train configurations: series, parallel, and ''through-the-ground'' parallel. These simulations are used to study how efficiency and agility are affected by the motor, fuel converter, and hybrid configuration.

Three different vehicle models are developed to optimize the drive train of a vehicle for three stages of the SAE Formula Hybrid competition: autocross, endurance, and acceleration. Input cycles are created based on rough estimates of track geometry. The output from these ADVISOR simulations is a series of plots of velocity profile and energy storage State of Charge that provide a good estimate of how the Formula Hybrid vehicle will perform on the given course.

The most noticeable discrepancy between the input cycle and the actual velocity profile of the vehicle occurs during deceleration. A weighted ranking system is developed to organize the simulation results and to determine the best drive train configuration for the Formula Hybrid vehicle. Results show that the through-the-ground parallel configuration with front-mounted motors achieves an optimal balance of efficiency, simplicity, and cost.

This vehicle model based on ADVISOR simulation is applicable to various studies concerning performance and efficiency of hybrid drive trains.

The German " Dr med" plays a specific role in doctoral thesis settings since students may start the underlying doctoral project during their studies at medical school.

If a Medical Faculty principally encourages this approach, then it should support the students in performing the respective projects as efficiently as possible. Consequently, it must be ensured that students are able to implement and complete a doctoral project in parallel to their studies.

As a characteristic efficiency feature of these " Dr med" initiatives, the proportion of doctoral projects successfully completed shortly after graduating from medical school is proposed and illustrated. The proposed characteristic can be estimated by the time period between the state examination date of completion of the qualifying medical examination and the doctoral examination. Completion of the doctoral project "during their medical studies" was then characterised by a doctoral examination no later than 12 months after the qualifying medical state examination.

The median duration between state and doctoral examination was 27 months. CMS Thesis Award. Riccardo received his Ph. First, at the individual and organizational levels, advisors who work in supportive organizations and who collaborate with other advisors are more likely to provide climate information. Second, advisors are more likely to provide climate information if it does not interfere with their main profit making business e.

Third, there is a significant positive relationship between trust in a greater number or sources of information and use of climate information.

Fourth, the way advisors perceive short- and long-term risk also influences their willingness to provide climate information; the more concerned they are about long-term climate-related risks to farming, the more likely they are to provide or want to provide advice based on climate information.

Differently from other empirical work in the literature, our analytical model suggests that neither negative experiences with climate information in the past nor the high level of uncertainty characteristic of climate information appear to influence advisors. Full Text Available Abstract Background Patient advisory councils are a way for healthcare organizations to promote patient engagement. Despite mandates to implement patient advisory councils through programs like the Patient-Centered Medical Home PCMH, there is a paucity of data measuring the impact of patients functioning in advisory roles.

Our objective is to investigate whether patient engagement in patient advisory councils is linked to improvements in clinical quality, patient safety or patient satisfaction. Article selection utilized dual screening facilitated by DistillerSR software, with group discussion to resolve discordance. Observational studies, randomized controlled trials, and case studies were included that described patients serving in an advisory role where primary outcomes were mentioned.

Reference lists of included studies and grey literature searches were conducted. Qualitative thematic analysis was performed to synthesize results. Results Database searching yielded articles total after removing duplicates, with articles meeting full text inclusion criteria. Advisory roles included patient advisory councils, ad-hoc patient committees, community advisory councils, experience-based co-design, and other.

Sensitivity to the different death receptor ligands was stimulated using pretreatment with the cytokine IFN-gamma and the proteasome inhibitor MG To investigate the mechanisms underlying the changes in rhTRAIL sensitivity, alterations in expression levels of targets of interest were measured by Western blot analysis.

Co-immunoprecipitation was used to determine the composition of the death-inducing signalling complex at the cell membrane. SW cells were sensitive to all three of the DR -targeting agents tested, although the agonistic DR 5 antibody induced only weak caspase 8 cleavage and limited apoptosis. Surprisingly, agonistic DR 4 and DR 5 antibodies induced equivalent DISC formation and caspase 8 cleavage at the level of their individual receptors, suggesting impairment of further caspase 8 processing upon DR 5 stimulation.

SWTR cells were cross-resistant to all DR -targeting agents as a result of decreased caspase 8 expression levels. Results SW cells were sensitive to all three of the DR -targeting agents tested, although the agonistic DR 5 antibody induced only weak caspase 8 cleavage and limited apoptosis. Time-based metering is an efficient air traffic management alternative to the more common practice of distance-based metering or "miles-in-trail spacing". Despite having demonstrated significant operational benefit to airspace users and service providers, time-based metering is used in the United States for arrivals to just nine airports and is not used at all for non-arrival traffic flows.

The Multi-Center Traffic Management Advisor promises to bring time-based metering into the mainstream of air traffic management techniques. Not constrained to operate solely on arrival traffic, Multi-Center Traffic Management Advisor is flexible enough to work in highly congested or heavily partitioned airspace for any and all traffic flows in a region.

This broader and more general application of time-based metering is expected to bring the operational benefits of time-based metering to a much wider pool of beneficiaries than is possible with existing technology. It also promises to facilitate more collaborative traffic management on a regional basis.

This paper focuses on the operational concept of the Multi-Center Traffic Management Advisor , touching also on its system architecture, field test results, and prospects for near-term deployment to the United States National Airspace System.

Volunteer SNL engineers and scientists team with the faculty of participating schools to enhance the teachers' abilities to capture and hold the student's scientific imagination and develop their scientific skills. This is done primarily through providing laboratory resources, training the teachers how to use those resources, and advising how to obtain them in the future.

Forensic advisors FA at the National Institute for Criminalistics and Criminology NICC , generalists in forensic science, act as an advising body to the magistrate to improve communication between the various parties involved in the investigation: magistrate, police and crime scene investigators, and forensic experts. Their role is manifold, but their main objectives are to optimise trace processing by selecting the most pertinent traces in the context of the case and by advising magistrates on the feasibility of forensic analyses in particular circumstances in regards to the latest technical advances.

Despite the absence of a legal framework governing their role and involvement in judicial cases, the demand for their services has increased over the years.

Initially, forensic advisors were called for complex homicide cases. Due to the proximity with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the types of offences for which their expertise was sought have become more diverse mainly including robbery, burglary and sexual assault cases , leading to a diversity in the types of cases handled by the forensic advisors complex, simple and review.

In many of the cases they are requested for, in addition to consulting on the best analytical strategy, forensic advisors also assume the role of case coordinator regarding the seized objects and their respective analyses. Indeed, in the majority of cases treated by the FAs, two or more types of expertise have been requested and performed, either at the internal laboratories of NICC or at external laboratories. This paper explains the role of the forensic advisors in Belgium, the path that let to their current status and problems encountered.

However, while government statistics provide insights into realized career transitions, there is little systematic data on scientists' career preferences and thus on the degree to which there is a mismatch between observed career paths and scientists' preferences.

Moreover, we lack systematic evidence whether career preferences adjust over the course of the PhD training and to what extent advisors exacerbate imbalances by encouraging their students to pursue academic positions.

Based on a national survey of PhD students at tier-one U. We also show that the attractiveness of academic careers decreases significantly over the course of the PhD program, despite the fact that advisors strongly encourage academic careers over non-academic careers.

Our data provide an empirical basis for common concerns regarding labor market imbalances. Our results also suggest the need for mechanisms that provide PhD applicants with information that allows them to carefully weigh the costs and benefits of pursuing a PhD, as well as for mechanisms that complement the job market advice advisors give to their current students.

Education regarding colorectal cancer screening and distribution of free fecal occult blood test FOBT kits are evidence-based interventions that can significantly increase screening. However, this community will only benefit if the intervention is broadly disseminated. We assessed the feasibility of promoting colorectal cancer screening in Filipino American community settings working with community health advisors , and the practicality of conducting one-on-one or small group education, in addition to passing out free FOBT kits.

Twenty community health advisors from 4 organizations engaged in recruitment and education activities with participants. Community health advisors consistently completed screening questionnaires to establish eligibility and kept logs of FOBT distribution.

However, they did not consistently record eligible participants who did not consent to participate. Process checklists that indicated what information was covered in each educational session and postsession follow-up logs were partially completed. Almost all participants reported receipt of intervention components and receipt of screening at 4-month follow-up and reported high acceptability of the program.

The pilot study established the feasibility of working with community health advisors to promote colorectal cancer screening in Filipino American community settings. Findings informed the design of a dissemination trial that is currently ongoing with regards to monitoring recruitment, intervention implementation and follow-up and allowing flexibility regarding one-on-one or small group education. This report represents the final phase of Swiss Federal Office of Energy project 'Strategy for long-term management of city-owned real estate - the case of the City Council of Chiasso'.

By applying the two tools in parallel, it was possible to compare information and data obtained, and also to obtain indications for the evaluation of the usability of the tools. To achieve this, five buildings in the territory of the city of Chiasso were submitted to the tools for analysis.

The applications have highlighted the usability of each case study. The ease of use of Retrofit Advisor has allowed the evaluation of each proposed scenario; by using the same reference system, comparable data are obtained at indication level to support the choice of the intervention strategy on existing buildings. In addition to the analysis of the current status, the tool Retrofit Advisor supports a structure analysis over three intervention scenarios, namely reparation, renovation, rebuild.

Data entry does not require advanced knowledge of construction work, and is limited to basic characteristics. On the basis of contents criteria and cost analysis, the approach has allowed the evaluation of different options for the improvement of the buildings, from simple reparation to total rebuild. Estimates are evaluated in terms of cost, of environmental impact, and, in the case of Retrofit.

Recently there were mostly emotional debates about the scientific background and relevance of the German academic title " Dr.

When submitting their doctoral thesis at the Medical School of Hannover students were asked anonymously about the type, topic, duration, quality of supervision as well as frequency and type of publication of the results. The supervision was graded as good by the majority of students. The duration working on the thesis was equivalent to 47 weeks of a full time employment. There was some negative influence in participating in lectures and courses. The ability of how to interprete scientific data was assumed to be positively influenced.

About two thirds stated that the results had been published in original articles at the time of submitting the thesis. More data from other medical faculties are needed to document the relevance of the medical dissertation to replace the emotional by a more rational debate. Qualitative study was applied by involving three tenured lecturers at College of Islamic Studies, in Java as the research subjects.

Two data collection techniques were applied, such as interview and documentation, to trace evidence on what types of feedback used, how students noticed, and how they impacted on subsequent drafts. This study revealed that indirect feedback using error codes and commentary was the most frequent form used during the advisory session.

However, the mere use of feedback could only serve a short-term impact on the development of writing, and even it seemed only to spoon-feed them which could create burdens in writing. It was quite evident that engaging them in such self-regulated and interdependence group works, through problem-solving discussion and peer review, was much worthier as compared to only ask them to process the feedback themselves.
